AANUK&I has received some excellent feedback recently regarding Barbara Lantin’s feature in The Times (’Awake Under the Knife’ T2 18.02.08) Several AANUK&I contacts contributed to the article, which includes a case study of Sally’s own experience. The article also prints advice regarding what to do in awareness incidents. Following the Times article, Sally has received an invitation from the organisers of 7th International Symposium on Memory and Awareness in Anaesthesia (MAA7 Munich, 13th-15th March) to join remarkable and valiant campaigner Carol Weihrer (Anesthesia Awareness Campaign Inc) in speaking from the patient’s viewpoint.

This an exciting opportunity for AANUK&I to have an input into this significant medical agenda, and to be updated on not only the latest research into awareness and its consequences on patients, but also on some of the latest technologies and ideas with regard to consciousness monitoring. You can see further details of the conference and its keynote speakers at www.maa7.net

On 24th February, The Sunday Times produced their own article featuring Linda Hinchcliffe’s personal story of awareness (’Awake’). Following this, and in anticipation of the soon-to-be-released fiction feature film of the same name, the Royal College of Anaesthetists have produced a short feature on awareness on their website, which includes a link to the ‘Risk Information Leaflet’ the RCoA provide for patients prior to receiving anaesthesia. You can see the RCoA feature, and leaflet link here.
