News Update

September 15, 2005

Over the summer Sally met with Anne Murray from the Patient Liaison Group of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Anne is a Lay Member of the PLG, and was concerned that the risk of awareness under anaesthesia, with its terrible consequences on victims, was fully aired and explored by the group. Anne reported back to the PLG about her meeting with Sally, a report that then developed into a discussion about the problem of Awareness during general anaesthesia. Lay and professional members were given an opportunity to exchange views.

Anne recently fedback to AANUK&I that the RCoA is now producing a series on “Risks Associated with your Anaesthetic”, Section 8 of which will be specifically devoted to the risk of awareness! In it, patients are encouraged to provide feedback if they think they have been aware - regardless of whether or not any pain has been involved.

The series is still in draft form, and has yet to be presented to the College Council for approval - but its a start! News update will keep you informed of when the series is accessible - or you could checkout the RCoA website yourselves on through our links page.
